Shipwreck Survivor's daughter sees family history on display
In January 1971 the Robertson family left Falmouth to embark on the adventure of a lifetime - sailing their 43ft schooner, Lucette, around the world. Eighteen months into the trip, 300 miles off the Galapagos Islands, disaster struck and they had to abandon ship in a 9ft dinghy, the Ednamair. After spending a gruelling 38 days lost at sea the family were eventually rescued by a Japanese fishing vessel.
This week the National Maritime Museum Cornwall was delighted to welcome Sarah Robertson, the daughter of Neil Robertson one of the survivors of this incredible ordeal, who visited the Museum to see the boat in which her father survived for all those weeks.
Sarah Robertson says: "Even having grown up knowing my father's story it's still amazing to think of him as a young boy, with the rest of the family, surviving for so long. I know that the Ednamair is one of the most popular displays at the Museum and it's nice to think that other people might be inspired by my father's story."
The story of the Robertson's incredible survival is part of the Maritime Museum's Survival Zone, which explores what it takes to survive when the worst happens at sea.
